What Is a G-Body Car?
G-Body is GM’s internal designation for a rear-wheel-drive, mid-size platform produced from 1978 through 1988. Six models were built on it across four GM divisions:

Chevrolet Malibu
The Malibu was Chevrolet’s more understated G-Body offering, sold as both a coupe and sedan and generally positioned as a value-focused daily driver rather than a performance or luxury model. It’s a straightforward, honest platform to restore, with a growing but still relatively affordable parts and enthusiast community compared to the Monte Carlo SS.
Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Chevrolet El Camino

Buick Regal
The Regal is best known today for the Grand National and GNX performance variants built in the mid-to-late 1980s, which have become some of the most sought-after G-Body cars on the collector market.
Regal-specific trim, badging, and lighting are unique to the model and not shared with its G-Body siblings.
Pontiac Grand Prix
The Grand Prix rounded out the G-Body lineup as Pontiac’s entry, offered in multiple trim levels across its production run with its own distinct grille, trim, and badging that differ from every other G-Body model, despite the shared underlying chassis.
What This Means When You’re Shopping for Parts
The single most important thing to take away from the G-Body family tree is this: shared platform does not mean shared parts. Trim, molding, lighting, and badging are almost always brand- and model-specific — a Monte Carlo tail light won’t fit a Regal, and a Cutlass Supreme grille won’t fit a Grand Prix. When you’re sourcing parts for any G-Body restoration, always confirm you’re looking at listings for your specific model and, in most cases, your specific model year.
